Laurel & Hardy

TWICE TWO

Hal Roach - MGM, 1933.  Directed by Charles Rogers and Lloyd French.  Camera:  Kenneth Peach.  With Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, James Finlayson, Baldwin Cooke, Charlie Hall.

In dual roles, Laurel & Hardy play themselves and each other's wives, gathering for a special anniversary dinner.  One of their most original in concept but unfortunately one of their weakest in execution and comedy content, Twice Two is a misfire attempt to repeat the formula of Brats.

There are some genuinely funny moments at the beginning: Hardy's agitated attempts to leave his office in time for the dinner, Laurel neatly decapitating a bouquet of Hardy's flowers by closing a door on them; but, thereafter, despite the engaging pantomime of Laurel & Hardy as wives, and the four-cornered marital bickering, it soon bogs down into rather tiresome and repetitious gags.
