We end the month with another
Theda Bara picture, from her movie
Cleopatra. This is a rather haunting image, to say the least.
And
the quality of this very old photo was surprisingly good, with great detail
(such as
the hair on his arm). |
July 31, 2004 |
After some lousy computer problems earlier this
week, we're finally back up. We resume with our first picture of
John Wayne. Expect a few more early shots of this rugged Hollywood
legend. |
July 28, 2004 |
Added a picture of
Betty Grable from
The Dolly Sisters. |
July 25, 2004 |
Theda Bara returns. This picture is from her 1917 offering of
Cleopatra―well before Liz and Dick romped along the banks of the Nile.
And another film clip debuts: a scene from
Two Tars, starring
Laurel and Hardy from 1928.
Finally, we offer a picture of
Charlie Chaplin from
A Dog's Life. |
July 21, 2004 |
We've finished the last (for now)
Alice White picture. More to come for this relatively unknown
actress, if we can locate more photos of her.
Also look for the
Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. picture from
The Mark of Zorro. The bottom part of the photo fades somewhat,
but it's still an interesting tableau.
Finally, we close out Tuesday with a new
Marx Brothers scan, from
A Day at the Races. This is the first of 27 new pictures of
Minnie's Boys, from their most popular movies―to be added over the next few
weeks. (The combined Marx Brothers zip file will be unavailable until
all their pictures are complete.) |
July 20, 2004 |
At Judy's request, we've added a new picture of
a young
Gary Cooper with
Clara Bow, from their movie
Children of Divorce. (The combined Clara Bow zip file
will be unavailable until all her pictures are complete.)
Betty Grable also makes repeat appearance in a scene from
Coney Island.
Added movie summaries for several
Marx Brothers movies:
Animal Crackers,
The Cocoanuts,
Duck Soup,
Horse Feathers and
Monkey Business. |
July 19, 2004 |
We added a second
Vilma Banky picture. It's difficult to find photos for this
relatively forgotten star. In this setting, she seems
curiously disembodied―you be the judge. |
July 18, 2004 |
Added a new picture of the Peek-a-Boo Girl,
Veronica Lake, as well as a
Charlie Chaplin film clip from
A Night in the Show.
Created the
John Wayne page. Pictures to follow.
Inserted placeholders in various movie stars'
pages for over 100 new pictures to be added in the coming weeks.
Added movie summaries for
Coney Island,
The Dolly Sisters,
Sweet Rosie O'Grady,
Tin Pan Alley,
The Man Who Came to Dinner,
Now, Voyager,
Way Down East,
Children of Divorce,
Her Wedding Night,
Hoop-la,
Red Hair,
Hula,
A Dog's Life,
Shoulder Arms,
The Sisters,
Captain Blood,
The Charge of the Light Brigade,
Dodge City,
San Antonio,
Santa Fe Trail and
They Died With Their Boots On. |
July 17, 2004 |
We've got two more
Charlie Chaplin pictures―a classic tramp pose and a scene from
The Gold Rush.
There are also two new photos of the
Marx Brothers.
The first one is
an early shot of the four brothers
(including Zeppo). Unfortunately, the photo is a couple of
generations old, and has numerous vertical striations and general graininess.
However, the appeal of all four brothers together in one picture outweighs
these shortcomings, so we offer it for your interest. (There was a
fifth brother, Gummo, who didn't appear in the movies with the other Marxes.)
The second
Marx Brothers
photo depicts them in a playful tonsorial mood! |
July 16, 2004 |
Added a new
Fay Wray picture. |
July 15, 2004 |
Completed the second and (for now) last
Vivien Leigh picture. This was a bear to do―thousands of
scratches, pops/clicks and imperfections in the original photo. The
end result, however, is very satisfying. We hope you'll agree.
We've also added a
Charlie Chaplin film clip, from
The Rink.
Finally, there's a new
Anna May Wong picture―a pensive pose. |
July 13, 2004 |
There's a new picture of
Harpo Marx, the original Harmonicat!
We also have another
Alice White picture, from
The Big Noise. Unfortunately, the original photo was very grainy.
It's a nice publicity still of her, but not as crisp as some. |
July 12, 2004 |
Added two more pictures of
Alice White, and one of
Barbara Stanwyck from
Lady of Burlesque.
We also have a film clip from
Charlie Chaplin's landmark movie
The Kid. |
July 11, 2004 |
We've got another picture of
Deanna Durbin today. |
July 10, 2004 |
Added
Vivien Leigh in costume from
Gone With the Wind,
as well as a first picture of 1920's flapper
Alice White.
We also added a new film clip of
Johnny Weissmuller in
Tarzan the Ape Man. |
July 9, 2004 |
The famous 1930's and 40's songbird,
Deanna Durbin, makes her debut today―the first of two pictures.
We've also got a new film clip of
Charlie Chaplin in
A Night Out. |
July 8, 2004 |
Our first two
Carole Lombard pictures appear today.
We also moved the mummy picture from
Boris Karloff's page to a new
Lon Chaney, Jr. page, based on input from two visitors―thanks to
David and Marcelo for catching this error. It looks like the picture
is from
The Mummy's Ghost, for which a movie summary has been added.
Finally, we offer a film clip of
Veronica Lake in
This Gun for Hire. Although she appears to be lip-synching her
musical number, it's still a charming vignette. |
July 7, 2004 |
Two
Errol Flynn pictures arrive―both from
Robin Hood. More to come for this popular swashbuckler and
romantic leading star.
We've also added another
Rudolph Valentino picture from
The Son of the Sheik. |
July 6, 2004 |
Added a new
Hedy Lamarr picture. I solemnly promise to deliver many more
photos of this beautiful actress!
We've also got a new film clip from the classic film
Frankenstein (Shiver!). |
July 5, 2004 |
Finished
Boris Karloff's page (for now), with a large, in-your-face scan from
(gulp!)
Frankenstein. With this one, you can really see all the detailed
makeup that went into the monster's face.
Attributed the current
Judy Garland scan to
The Wizard of Oz. Thanks to Sylvie's sharp eye on this one.
Also added the movie summary. |
July 3, 2004 |
We start July off with a new film clip―from
Dracula. |
