As August comes to an end, we introduce little-known actress Dorothy Sebastian.  She appeared in numerous silents and talkies, but may be best remembered as Buster Keaton's leading lady in Spite Marriage and Free and Easy (and his off-screen paramour).

August 31, 2005

We add another new face today:  Dorothy Burgess, in a 1929 film called (yup!) Pleasure Crazed.  In this scene, she and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. look-alike Kenneth MacKenna contemplate the roses.  The movie also starred Clara Bow's future husband, Rex Bell.

This lovely photo was submerged in a miasma of scratches and gooey white fingerprints.  Doctor Macro to the rescue!

August 30, 2005

Alice Brady bows in today.  This early screen actress is shown in a 1916 potboiler called Bought and Paid For with Montagu Love (what a great moniker!).  Notice the single depressed piano key with no one touching it.  We have a movie summary too.

We scanned this interesting image from an original photo that had lots of scratches in the detail areas―always a tedious removal process.  Several hours later, voilą!

Also play Errol Flynn's new film clip from Captain Blood.  In this scene Olivia de Havilland buys him in a slave auction, and he's less than grateful!

Today we have three (count 'em) film clips of James Cagney in Each Dawn I Die.

In clip #1, on the train to prison he finds himself next to George Raft.

In clip #2, he's lounging in the prison yard with Raft.  Also look for Slapsie Maxie Rosenbloom.

In clip #3, he and Raft are plotting under the work tables.

Also, here are two film clips from The Prisoner of Zenda.  The first showcases Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.  In it, he has an extended scene with Raymond Massey and Mary Astor, and―literally―smokes up a storm.

In the second clip, Ronald Colman and Madeleine Carroll celebrate his inauguration as grand Pooh Bah, but Raymond Massey arrives to spoil their fun.  Pay attention to the clever exchange between Colman and Massey:  it's filled with intrigue.  Yum!
