And enjoy three more scans of Audrey Hepburn in The Annex, from Fashion Victim (with artistic input from William on #27).

Sever sent us a neat movie still of Charlton Heston in Touch of Evil.  Yes, the character on the far left is (gulp!) Orson Welles!  There's also a new movie summary.

Nick prepared a panoramic scan of Bing Crosby relaxing in regal splendor.

Sever pointed out that we needed a movie summary for our Audrey Hepburn picture from Breakfast at Tiffany's, so we added one.

Thanks to all our guest contributors today!

Radio Show

Here's a nice portrait of William Powell.

Nick and Jane have also sent us three more Ziegfeld Girls, photographed by Alfred Cheney Johnston.  Thank you very much for these!

Sever weighs in with two beautiful scans of Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn from 1949's Adam's Rib (we have a new movie summary), and a great scan of William Powell and Nat Pendleton from The Great Ziegfeld.  We appreciate these, Sever!

We also have two film clips from Arsenic and Old Lace that accompany the two pictures we posted on February 8.  The first has Cary Grant and Priscilla Lane trying to get a marriage license unobtrusively.  The second clip contains all the elements of our photo of Priscilla Lane with the two aunts (which didn't occur in the movie), with everyone romping about (notice the lace curtains, the chest under the window containing the body, and the apparel the characters are wearing)―close enough.  Enjoy!

Finally, Marcus corrected the film attribution of one of our Claudette Colbert pictures in The Annex.  It's from The Sign of the Cross.  Thanks, Marcus, for catching this!

In that same vein, we replaced the film clip for Colbert's true Cleopatra picture in the main gallery, so the clip more closely reflects the actual photo on our site.

It's in the bag!  Here's our final picture of Leo Gorcey, in Triple Trouble (1950), with fellow prisoner Huntz Hall.  This scan is for Chelsea.

Next, we have new photos from Sever:

Thank you, Sever, for these wonderful scans!

We also have a new desktop wallpaper of Mary Pickford from Sylvie.

Sever identified one of our Kathryn Grayson pictures as being from 1945's Anchors Aweigh, with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra.  Thanks, Sever.  We've added a new movie summary and (count 'em) two film clips.  The first is a scene of her with Grady Sutton, Frank Sinatra, and Gene Kelly.  The second clip is José Iturbi's famous Liszt second Hungarian Rhapsody sequence with all the kids joining in (look for some great mid-1940s shots of the Hollywood Bowl).

We have a fine picture of Peter Lorre, courtesy of Sever.  In this shot from 1938's Mr. Moto's Gamble are (L to R) Keye Luke, Harold Huber and Peter Lorre.  Anne identified the film for us.

Nick and Jane sent us two more Alfred Cheney Johnston pictures:  Dorothy Flood and an unknown Ziegfeld Girl.

And Jane has continued the largess with four new scans:  Clara Bow, Billie Burke, Mae Busch, and Charles Ray.

To end it, we have a great shot of Carole Lombard kicking the stuffing out of John Barrymore in an early screwball comedy, Twentieth Century, courtesy of Mal.

Thanks to all our guest contributors today!

February 6, 2006

Nick sent us new pictures of June Lang (by photographer Anthony Ugrin) and Simone Simon (photographer George Hurrell) for The Annex.

More arresting Ziegfeld/actress scans from Nick and Jane:

Thanks, Nick and Jane!

Our appreciation also to CJ and Sever, who identified a Marilyn Monroe photo as being from The Prince and the Showgirl, with Laurence Olivier.  We've added a movie summary.

February 4, 2006

Mal sent us two nice pictures of James Cagney for The Annex:

  • a photo from Billy Wilder's cold war comedy gem, One, Two, Three.  This movie is a treat, so we've thrown in a film clip of Cagney barking orders near the end of the film.  Staccato machine gun fire in The Public Enemy, and a rapid fire delivery 30 years later―what a guy!.  We know this film is a little late in his career, but it's just too good to pass up.  There's also a movie summary.  Enjoy!

  • a scan from Angels With Dirty Faces, with Ann Sheridan.

And here are some great Ziegfeld/actress scans from Nick and Jane:

Finally, Sever has sent us two intriguing Laurence Olivier pictures, from As You Like It and Spartacus.  We've added movie summaries.

Thanks to all our guest contributors today!

One, Two,
Three

We've reorganized the Galleries page to reflect the growing number of actors and actresses featured on our site.  We've moved the separate Annex table of contents into the main Galleries page, so individuals are listed just once.

Don't worry, we haven't removed any pictures―we've just consolidated the list of actors and actresses onto one page.

Since we plan to add hundreds of new actors and actresses over time, we'll eventually need to create separate table of contents pages, alphabetically by last name.  For now, we're listing them all on one page.

Please let us know of any incorrect links on the new Galleries page.

We'll post some new scans later today.

Jane has sent us some new photos for The Annex, including Elsie Ferguson (photo by Arnold Genthe), Corinne Griffith (photo by Edward Bower Hesser), Grace Moore (photo by Edward Thayer Monroe), and Ann Pennington (photo by White Studios),

We also have a film clip with the famous tango scene from The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, starring Rudolph Valentino.

We also have a film clip of the famous conclusion to Sunset Boulevard.  Speaking of film clips, we also replaced the clip from Ball of Fire―you can actually hear the new one!

Finally, enjoy The Bickersons in two half-hour radio shows, starring Don Ameche and Frances Langford, including the first episode which aired in 1946.
